DETROIT — Some 198 Catholic High School League athletes will be moving up to collegiate competition this fall.

Brendan Haisenleder of Marine City Cardinal Mooney and Jasen Oliver of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep are two examples of numerous athletes in the CHSL who wear a medal of the cross on their uniforms.

They were interviewed separately but expressed similar sentiments.

“God’s always watching me, protecting me,” Oliver said, “guiding me to success. I grew up in a very spiritual family. My grandmother who is very religious passed down to my mom and now passed down to my generation.”

Oliver played three years at St. Mary’s on its 2021 and 2022 state champion baseball teams and this spring’s team that re-set the state’s record winning streak at 84. He plans on continuing his baseball career at Indiana.

Haisenleder set all kinds of gridiron records at Cardinal Mooney. He ran for 3,441 yards and 49 touchdowns in two seasons.

“I was raised Catholic my entire life,” he said. “I know (God) is always watching over me all the time. He’s always with me. God comes first in my life.”

Haisenleder said he’ll continue wearing the medal playing football at Siena Heights University.
