CHSL boys start state tournament play after triumphant finish to regular season

DETROIT — The Catholic League boys regular season schedule went out on a   triumphant note Thursday night (March 5) winning both ends the Operation Friendship doubleheader between the two top teams from the CHSL and the Detroit Public Schools league.

In the championship game, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep beat Cass Tech, 70-65, in overtime.

In the game between the runners-up, University of Detroit Jesuit defeated Detroit Douglass, 67-59.

The Eaglets (19-1) led by 19 points after three quarters, but Cass Tech rallied to tie the game 54-54.

St. Mary’s Mr. Basketball nominee Lorne Bowman scored eight of his game-high 21 points in overtime. Nearly half of the Eaglets offense came from the free-throw line, going 31 for 35, including 12 of 13 in overtime.

U of D Jesuit employed a balanced scoring attack for its victory. Charles Turner had 14, freshman guard Sonny Wilson 13, and Addison Kalmbach 12.

Now the attention turns to the MHSAA tournament beginning on the district level Monday, March 9. District finals will be held March 13.
