Fracassa, Laffey to be inducted to CHSL Hall of Fame as ‘Legends’

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Two of Michigan’s winningest coaches will be inducted into the Catholic League as “Legends” during the 38th annual CHSL Hall of Fame banquet June 9 at Fern Hill Country Club, Clinton Township.

Al Fracassa won 430 games as football coach for 53 years at Royal Oak Shrine and Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice, the most of any coach in the state’s history.

Diane Laffey is in her 52nd year coaching at St. Anthony/East Catholic and, since 1970, at Harper Woods/Warren Regina. Her basketball and softball teams have won more than 1,700 games.

Other awards given include “Person of the Year” to Tim Kukla, retiring athletic director at Allen Park Cabrini; “School of the Year” to Farmington Hills Mercy; “Booster Club of the Year” to Pontiac Notre Dame; “Athletic Director of the Year” to Aaron Babicz of Novi Detroit Catholic Central; “Woman Athlete of the Year” to Taylor Timko of Notre Dame Prep; and “Man Athlete of the Year” to Garrett Schilling of Madison Heights Bishop Foley.

In addition, dozens of former CHSL athletes who have graduated from college will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
