Detroit — By mid-month, the 53-year-old religious order Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT) is expected to take up residence at Holy Redeemer Parish in Detroit.

Detroit Auxiliary Bishop Donald Hanchon, who has been pastor of the parish since 1999 and who has continued in the post awaiting his successor, will introduce the new pastor, Fr. Dennis Walsh, SOLT, along with an associate and two other SOLT priests and 14 seminarians who will live at the parish and attend Sacred Heart Major Seminary.

“The parish house will become their home, and it will be a busy place such as it has not been since the early days of the Redemptorists here,” wrote Bishop Hanchon in his parish bulletin this summer. The Redemptorist Fathers for a long time pastored Holy Redeemer, the largest parish in southwest Detroit.

The order’s regional priest servant, Fr. Gerry Sheehan, SOLT, visited Holy Redeemer and Sacred Heart Major Seminary in June. Fr. Sheehan proposed the SOLT fathers and seminarians move in, bringing the request to Corpus Christi Bishop William Michael Mulvey.

Bishop Mulvey agreed and, speaking with Archbishop Allen Vigneron, enrolled his men at the Detroit seminary.

Fr. Walsh and the associate-pastor-to-be, Fr. Richard Klepac, SOLT, are expected to be at Holy Redeemer come Aug. 15. Fr. Peter Marsalek and Fr. Brady Williams, both SOLT Fathers, will be the rector and formation director.

As for Bishop Hanchon, he plans to move to the former St. Stephen/Mary Mother of the Church rectory following his trip with Detroit teens to World Youth Day this month.

The SOLT Order was founded in 1958 by Fr. James Flanagan. Today, it includes priests, brothers deacons, sisters and members of the laity.

SOLT’s started mission is “to serve the areas of deepest apostolic need.”
