Marian sophomore's quest for repeat golf title ends on a miserable day

Bloomfield Hills Marian sophomore Shannon Kennedy's 153 (76 and 77) at Michigan State University's Forest Akers West course fell just short of enough for Kennedy's second individual golf championship.

Shannon Kennedy came within two strokes of defending the Division 2 individual championship she won last year as a freshman, in this fall’s state girls golf tournament.

It wasn’t for lack of trying.

The Bloomfield Hills Marian sophomore shot a 76 and 77 (153, good enough for a tie for third) on two rounds at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers West course.

“It was heartbreaking,” said her co-coach Cathie Fritz.

It also was extremely miserable particularly for the second round on Saturday, when the competition had to be suspended twice because of rain, sleet and hail.

“We teed off at 9:30 a.m. in 50-degree sunny weather,” Fritz said. “Then, about the seventh hole, the storms came. We didn’t finish until about 6:30. It was an extremely long and cold day. Some of the greens were covered with hail. Everything was soaking wet.”

Shannon is a competitor. “She grinds it out,” Fritz said. “She wanted to get back out there. She was disappointed.”

Shannon was among the leaders right up to the last two holes, which she bogeyed, the two strokes making the difference in her quest for a repeat championship.

Farmington Hills Mercy placed fourth in the team standings, six strokes ahead of Marian.

Of note: Notre Dame Prep senior Danielle Staskowski won her third consecutive individual first place by winning a playoff, the same way she won two years ago as a sophomore.

Division 3 was played on the Forest Akers East layout at Michigan State. Division 4 was played at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University.
