Name, logo unveiled for evangelization initiative: ‘Unleash the Gospel’

Unleash the Gospel Unleash the Gospel

DETROIT — The Archdiocese of Detroit has announced the name and logo of its evangelization initiative, an ongoing missionary effort that will include a synod on evangelization in November 2016.

“Unleash the Gospel” is the theme for the ongoing initiative, which was announced by Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron at Pentecost 2015 as a way to “change the culture” of the archdiocese from “maintenance to mission.”

According to a statement on the archdiocese’s website, aod.org, “Unleash the Gospel is a major push to change the DNA of the Church in Detroit to one of a Body of Christ on mission. What we are attempting is nothing less than a radical overhaul of the Church in Detroit, a complete reversal of our focus from inward or maintenance-focused, to outward, or mission-focused.”

Accompanying the release of the initiative’s name is a short video featuring Archbishop Vigneron and Auxiliary Bishop Michael J. Byrnes explaining the goals and purpose of the initiative.

A logo for the initiative shows the Detroit skyline and a cross protruding into its center, along with the words “Unleash the Gospel.”

A Twitter and Facebook hashtag, #ResurgetDetroit, will also be used to promote the initiative. Resurget is Latin for “It will rise” and is part of Detroit’s city motto coined by Catholic pioneer Fr. Gabriel Richard after a great fire that leveled the city in 1805: Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus, meaning, “We hope for better things; it will arise from the ashes.”

The evangelization initiative has so far included efforts such as Revive Detroit, a series of evangelization and racial healing talks by Deacon Larry Oney of Hope and Purpose Ministries; “Come, Encounter Christ!,” a three-day Eucharistic praise-and-worship experience making its way across the archdiocese; preparations for a Holy Door at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament during the Jubilee of Mercy; and plans for a spring conference on parish evangelization efforts.

The initiative also will encompass the 2016 synod from Nov. 18-20, for which preparations are also under way.

Along with the logo’s release, the archdiocese announced the location for the synod would be the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel in downtown Detroit. The location was chosen for its proximity to the archdiocesan Chancery Building and St. Aloysius Parish, which will serve as the “host parish” for liturgical activities, including opening and closing Masses. The downtown location also is “another demonstration of the Church’s commitment to and presence in Detroit,” according to messaging from the archdiocese.

During the three-day synod, approximately 450 attendees from parishes in six counties in southeast Michigan will gather for a period of intense prayer, reflection and ultimately offer recommendations on practical steps for evangelization to Archbishop Vigneron. Attendees will include official members, experts, observers and archdiocesan staff, as well as those appointed from parishes. The appointment process is currently under way and is expected to finish by early spring 2016.
