During this special Year of Consecrated Life, The Michigan Catholic is honoring all priests, sisters and brothers who have ministered in any capacity in the Archdiocese of Detroit and are celebrating a milestone anniversary this year. In the following pages, we honor 212 religious individuals and their selfless service to our parishes, schools and institutions. Among them is an astounding 12,855 years of service to God’s people. Felician Sisters


75 years


Sr. Mary Danatha Suchyta, CSSF, served as president, professor and director of several departments of Madonna University in Livonia over 54 years. She also taught at St. Louis the King and St. Stanislaus in Detroit, St. Florian in Hamtramck and served as vicar of the Felicians’ former Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Province in Livonia.

Sr. Mary Elaine Machlik, CSSF, ministered in education for 48 years at St. Hyacinth, St. Hilary, St. Andrew and St. Christine in Detroit; St. Michael in Livonia; Our Lady Queen of Apostles in Hamtramck; St. Stephen in New Boston; St. Mel in Dearborn; and St. Dunstan in Garden City. She also served as an archivist in Rome and Livonia.

Sr. Mary DePaul Szankin, CSSF, taught for nearly 50 years at schools of the archdiocese, including St. Michael, Livonia; St. Florian, Hamtramck; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Wyandotte; Our Lady Queen of Apostles, Hamtramck; St. Stanislaus, Detroit; St. Hyacinth, Detroit; St. Edith, Livonia; Our Lady of Refuge, Orchard Lake; St. Mel, Dearborn; and Our Lady Help of Christians, Detroit.

Sr. Mary Lucy Rezler, CSSF, taught for more than 50 years at schools of the archdiocese, including St. Stanislaus, Resurrection, Patronage of St. Joseph, St. Christine, Our Lady Help of Christians and St. Stephen/Mary, Mother of the Church in Detroit; Our Lady Queen of Apostles and St. Florian, Hamtramck; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Wyandotte; and Our Lady of Refuge, Orchard Lake.

Sr. Mary Thomasine Satkowiak, CSSF, served as administrator of the Senior Clergy Village in Livonia, and taught at several schools: Resurrection, St. Andrew, St. Stephen, Mary Mother of God and St. Christine in Detroit; St. Florian in Hamtramck; St. Hilary in Redford; St. Thecla in Clinton Township; St. Michael in Livonia and Our Lady of Refuge in Orchard Lake.

Sr. Mary Marita Winowiecki, CSSF, ministered in education at Resurrection, Our Lady Help of Christians and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Detroit; St. Florian in Hamtramck; St. Damian in Westland; and the Montessori Center of Our Lady in Livonia. She also assisted at Maryville Retreat Center in Holly.

Sr. Mary Hedwig Zera, CSSF, ministered in education at St. Florian and Queen of Apostles in Hamtramck; Our Lady Help of Christians, St. Stephen, St. Cunegunda and St. Louis the King in Detroit; St. Dunstan in Garden City; St. Michael and St. Genevieve in Livonia; Our Lady of Refuge in Orchard Lake; St. Valentine in Redford; St. Michael in Southfield; Our Lady of Mt. She currently serves at Marywood Nursing Care Center in Livonia.

Sr. Marie Ann Stamm, CSSF, served as chaplain, professor and adviser at Madonna University, Livonia; as chaplain of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department; and taught at St. Ignatius, Patronage of St. Joseph, Holy Ghost, St. Valentine and St. Andrew in Detroit; St. Michael in Livonia; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Wyandotte; Our Lady of Refuge in Orchard Lake; St. Hilary in Redford; and Ladywood High in Livonia.

Sr. Rose Mary Wolak, CSSF, taught at Madonna University, Ladywood High and St. Michael in Livonia; St. Stanislaus, St. Andrew and Nativity Diocesan High in Detroit; and served eight years in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State in Rome.

Sr. Thomas Marie Wadowski, CSSF, ministered as a nurse’s aide at St. Joseph Home in Livonia, and taught at Our Lady of Refuge, Orchard Lake; St. Hilary, Redford; St. Michael, Southfield; St. Damian, Westland; and St. Michael, Livonia. She also was library aide at Madonna University in Livonia.

Sr. Mary Juanita Szymanski, CSSF,taught for more than 40 years at schools of the archdiocese, including Our Lady of Refuge, Orchard Lake; St. Michael, Livonia; St. Stephen, New Boston; St. Mel, Dearborn; St. Genevieve, Livonia; Our Lady Queen of Apostles, Hamtramck; St. Sabina, Dearborn Heights; and the Montessori Center of Our Lady, Livonia. She also directed postulants, pre-tertians, temporary professed sisters and as provincial counselor for the Felicians. She currently leads mission integration of the Felicians’ Child Care centers in Livonia.

Sr. Agnes Marie Molitoris, CSSF, served as a nurse’s aide at St. Joseph Home, in the registrar’s office at Madonna University and as a teacher at the Montessori Center of Our Lady, all in Livonia.

Sr. Clement Stine, CSJ, ministered at St. Francis Home and taught for 38 years in Detroit, Taylor, Alma and St. Clair Shores. She also served as a nurse’s aide at St. John Hospital in Detroit.

Sr. Sylvia Dimeck, CSJ, taught at Ste. Anne (1952-54), St. Margaret Mary (1954-56), St. Cyril of Jerusalem (1956-60), St. David (1960-64) and St. Philip Neri (1969-70) in Detroit; St. Dennis, Royal Oak (1966-69); and St. Joan of Arc, St. Clair Shores (1964-66). She also ministered at St. John Hospital in Detroit and Fontbonne Auxiliary and Holley Institute, serving in elder care.

Sr. Rose Clement Canuelle, CSJ, taught at St. John Vianney, Flint; St. Ambrose, Parchment; St. David, Detroit; St. Mark, Warren; Sacred Heart, Birch Run; St. Veronica, Eastpointe. She served in parish ministry at St. Joseph, Lake Orion, and later as chaplain for 31 years at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. She currently ministers to the sick and homebound at St. Joan of Arc Parish, St. Clair Shores.

Sr. Mary Norman Daniels, CSJ, ministered in education, parish ministry and hospital chaplaincy, including at St. Leo Parish and Senior Citizens’ Center and Adult Education in Detroit.

Sr. Joan Hastreiter, CSJ, ministered in education for four years at St. Margaret Mary (1961-62) in Detroit and St. Veronica in East Detroit (1962-65).

Sr. Marie Leonard Richert, CSJ, taught at schools in Lincoln Park, Algonac, Ferndale and Flint. She also ministered at St. Francis Home for Boys (1974-83) and worked with the elderly in Port Huron.

Sr. Elizabeth Veenhuis, CSJ, ministered in education at St. David School in Detroit for two years and St. Cyril School in Taylor as teacher and principal for seven years. She also served for 18 years on the board of trustees at St. John Hospital in Detroit.

Sr. Lynn Roebert, CSJ, taught at St. Dennis, Royal Oak (1964-66); and St. Cyril, Taylor (1968-70).

Sr. Mildred Werner, CSJ, ministered in health care at St. John Hospital and Medical Center from 1985-2007.

Sr. Kathryn Pierce, IHM, currently serves as executive director of the Intercultural Consultation Service in Detroit. She also taught at St. Bede, Southfield (1959-63).

Sr. Mary Agnes Ryan, IHM, ministered as a psychologist and psychotherapist for more than 30 years in the Detroit area. She also taught at Our Lady Queen of Hope (1959-68) and Immaculata High in Detroit (1968-72), was co-provincial of the Southwest Province (1972-76), and served the Archdiocese of Detroit, Marygrove College and the IHMs in various capacities.

Sr. Julia Ann (Judy) Weirick, IHM, has ministered in education and health care, including at St. Thomas Aquinas (1959-63) and Holy Redeemer, Detroit (1963-69); and St. Charles Borromeo, Newport (1969-76).

Sr. Elaine Aldridge, IHM, has served as a clinical nurse at the IHM Infirmary, Monroe; Harper Hospital, Detroit; Hospice of Southeast Michigan, Southfield; St. Mary Health Care Center, Monroe; and in administration at ALCC Inc., Advantage Home Care Inc. and the Information Center Clinic in Taylor.

Sr. Juliana Casey, IHM, was provincial of the IHMs’ Northeast Province from 1979-85, and also taught at St. Mary Academy, Monroe (1967-69).

Sr. Paula Cathcart, IHM, taught at St. Mary of Redford (1967-69) and Our Lady Queen of Hope, Detroit (1969-74); was principal at St. Regis, Bloomfield Hills (1975-78), St. Mary, Wayne (1978-79) and St. Mary Academy, Monroe (1981-87). She also has served in environmental advocacy roles in Detroit.

Sr. Evelyn Craig, IHM, taught at St Patrick, Carleton (1969-71), and served in volunteer- and vocation-supporting roles in Monroe (1994-2007).

Sr. Carolina Diez de Andino, IHM, has ministered in education and in missions overseas.

Sr. Judith Anne Eliassen, IHM, ministered in education at St. Mary Academy, Monroe (1967-76); Holy Redeemer, Detroit (1976-2000); and Marygrove College, Detroit (2000-15). She currently serves as director of the college’s Teacher Academic Support Lab.

Sr. Margaret Gearhart, IHM, ministers in social work with the Monroe County Guardian and was formerly a case manager and advocate with the Children’s Center in Monroe (2005-07).

Sr. Susan Mahalik, IHM, taught at St. Patrick, Carleton (1987-91), and has served as a clinical therapist with Catholic Social Services (1999-2002) and Advanced Counseling Services (2002-13). She has been a certified social worker since 2013.

Sr. Anne Marie Murphy, IHM, taught journalism at Marian High, Bloomfield Hills (1970-74), and has ministered as a nurse in Monroe, Detroit and Dearborn Heights since 1978.

Sr. Virginia Pfau, IHM, taught at Meadow Montessori, Monroe (1981-82), was principal at St. Patrick, Carleton (1982-88), and served on the IHM Leadership Council (2000-06).

Sr. Yvonne Spenoso, IHM, taught at St. John, Monroe, from 1969-74.

Sr. Mary Frances Uicker, IHM, has served in music therapy at St. Leo, Detroit; the Detroit Psychiatric Institute; Henry Ford Hospice and Nursing Home, St. Clair Shores; and Sacred Heart, Roseville. She’s also coordinated religious education at Vista Maria High School, Dearborn Heights (1972-76), and St. Christopher Parish, Detroit (1976-80), and directed the IHM associate program (1986-89) and IHM campus spirituality (2009-present).

Sr. Patricia Westover, IHM, taught at Marian High, Bloomfield Hills (1970-71), and ministered as a nurse’s aide at the Motherhouse Infirmary in Monroe (1980-81).

Sr. Mary Janice Belen, RSM, served as director of the Practical School of Nursing in Pontiac (1952-56) and the Mercy School of Nursing in Detroit (1957-61).

Sr. Arlene Bennett, RSM, ministered on the faculty and as director of admissions for Mercy College of Detroit (1967-72), and as assistant director of the Archdiocese of Detroit’s Worship Office (1977-85).

Sr. Therese McFarland, RSM, taught at St. Mary Magdalene, Hazel Park; and Our Lady of La Salette, Berkley.

Sr. Mary Maurita Sengelaub, RSM, is the first woman to have been president of the Catholic Hospital Association (now the Catholic Health Association), and was inducted into the Modern Healthcare Hall of Fame in 2013. She also directed the School of Nursing at Mercy College of Detroit and Mercy School of Nursing (1948-51) and was special consultant to the Mercy Health Foundations (1990-94).

Sr. Mary Rosemond Seymour, RSM, ministered in education and social service at St. Monica and Immaculate Heart of Mary Schools (1958-63); COTS, a homeless shelter for children and adults (1988-90); the Poverty and Social Reform Institute (1990-99) and the Mercy Education Project (2000-02).

Sr. Mary Elizabeth Burns, RSM, served as dean of the nursing program at Mercy College beginning in 1963.

Sr. Carol Campbell, RSM, taught at Mercy High School in Farmington Hills (1987-88), and served as a health therapist and nutritional counselor at the Mercy Center and West Oakland County Senior Centers, and the McAuley Center in Farmington Hills (1992-2006).

Sr. Mary Yvonne Gellise, RSM, served as chief executive of St. Joseph Mercy Health System in Ann Arbor, as board chair of Mercy Health Services, and a member of the Trinity Health board and Catholic Health Ministries. She also ministered with the Washtenaw Housing Alliance serving the homeless. The Catholic Health Association honored her with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.

Sr. Mary Jude Gibfried, RSM, taught at East Detroit Public Schools (2005-10) and has ministered in education outside the archdiocese.

Sr. Monica Kostielney, RSM, influenced public policy for almost 40 years and began her ministry in education at schools in the Grand Rapids area. She began to work with the Michigan Catholic Conference in 1972, serving as president and CEO from 1994-2010, representing the most vulnerable in society by influencing legislation and public opinion. She has been named to numerous boards of directors, received gubernatorial appointments, and was awarded tributes from the state of Michigan. She was given the Holy Cross Pro-Ecclesia et Pontifice (For Church and Pontiff) medal by Pope Benedict XVI.

Sr. Mary DePaul Palaszek, RSM, ministered in education, including 14 years in Mercy Hospital Detroit lab. She currently ministers in Grand Rapids.

Sr. Mary Clare Yates, RSM, formerly Sr. Gertrude Mary, served in education and pastoral ministry at Immaculate Heart of Mary, Detroit (1964-65); Our Lady of La Salette, Berkley (1965-67); Our Lady of Mercy School (1968-73); Mercy College of Detroit (1967); Most Holy Trinity, Detroit (1997); Ste. Anne de Detroit (1992-94); and in theater arts at the Matrix Theatre, Detroit (1998-2009), and as a tutor at Earhart and Maybury School, Detroit (2009-present).

Sr. Maria Klosowski, RSM, has served many years in ministry to victims of domestic and sexual assault and in other community ministries, including Immigration Outreach in Detroit (2011-13). She currently serves on the Leadership Team for the Sisters of Mercy in Omaha, Neb.

Sr. Mary Ellen Brennan, RSM, has done pastoral work at St. Leo, Detroit (1983-2003); St. Therese of Lisieux, Shelby Township (1993-2005); the Huron Valley State Prison and Mercy Education Project.

Bro. Otto Waldmueller, CMM, was a missionary in South Africa and worked in building and property maintenance for the Mariannhill community in Dearborn Heights.

Fr. Andrew Heier, CMM, from Dearborn Heights, has served as a missionary in extreme rural Africa since 1968, primarily in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and South Africa. He retired from mission administration in 2013 and resides in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
