Sr. Armin Cooper, SC

Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Armin Cooper (formerly Sr. Mary Daniel) died Monday, Dec. 20 in Mother Margaret Hall, the nursing facility of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. She was 89 and had been a Sister of Charity for 71 years.

She was born Armin Valerian Cooper on August 14, 1921, in Memphis, Tenn., the daughter of John T. and Julia A. (Scheid) Cooper.

Sr. Cooper earned the Bachelor of Science degree in education from the Athenaeum of Ohio in 1944, a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the College of Mount St. Joseph, Cincinnati, in 1950, and a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana in 1960.

She served in the ministry of teaching – in the fields of math and science — in the dioceses of Cincinnati, Denver, Santa Fe, Detroit and Memphis. In the Archdiocese of Detroit, Sr. Cooper taught at Shrine High School from 1964 until 1972.

In Memphis, Sr. Cooper also taught English as a second language in a diocesan program for refugees from Cambodia, Vietnam and Sudan. In 1995, she retired to the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse at Mount St. Joseph, Ohio, to serve in the ministry of prayer.

She is survived by nephews, nieces and her sister, Sr. Imelda Cooper, SC. Her sister Rita Barrett and brother John Cooper preceded her in death.

Sr. Cooper’s funeral Mass was Dec. 23 at the Immaculate Conception Chapel at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse in St. Joseph. Burial was in the Sisters of Charity cemetery.
