Sr. Barbara Hubbard, OP

Sr. Barbara Hubbard, OP, formerly Sr. Alice Josepha Hubbard, died May 18 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 87 and in her 67th year in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sr. Hubbard was born in Royal Oak to Joseph and Margaret (Graffy) Hubbard. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and from University of Detroit (Detroit-Mercy).

Sr. Hubbard ministered in elementary, secondary and adult education for 26 years in Michigan, Illinois, Arizona, California and in East Africa. In Michigan, she taught at St. Joseph, Sault Ste. Marie (1951-61); Sacred Heart, Munising (1961-67, including as principal); and later served in retreat and pastoral ministry at St. Anastasia Parish in Troy (1982-95). Sr. Hubbard also taught four years at Mtendere Secondary School in Dedza, Malawi, in East Africa, and served for a year and a half on the formation team at St. Mary Leadership Center in Kabwe, Zambia, in Central Africa.

A funeral Mass was offered in St. Catherine Chapel in Adrian on May 23. Rite of Committal was to be in the Congregation cemetery.
