Sr. Margaret Andre Stechschulte, formerly known as Elizabeth Stechschulte, died Sept. 26 at Bixby Hospital in Adrian. She was 81 and in the 57th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sr. Stechschulte was born in Owosso to Rudolph and Margaret (Attenburger) Stechschulte. Sister graduated from St. Paul High School in Owosso and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a Master of Arts degree in English from DePaul University in Chicago.
Sister spent 22 years ministering in education in Detroit, Southgate, and Lansing; Chicago and Oak Park, Ill.; and Des Moines, Iowa. She taught at St. Suzanne, Detroit (1954-55); Benedictine High School, Detroit (1968-71); Aquinas High School, Southgate (1971-75); and Catholic Central High School, Lansing (1975-77).
She was the delegate for religious in the Archdiocese of Detroit for eight years under Cardinal Adam Maida. Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2008.
“Sister Margaret was a devoted and prayerful religious woman of great faith,” said Cardinal Maida. “In her role as Delegate for Religious, she served with great compassion and wisdom. God bless her — a kind and gentle person has gone home to God.”
“I have fond memories of Sr. Margaret,” said Pamela Beech, director of human resources for the archdiocese. “She was a wonderful friend, colleague and mentor, a woman of great wisdom and knowledge, and a woman of great faith.”
Sr. Stechschulte is survived by two brothers, David Stechschulte of Owosso and George Stechschulte of Mount Clemens, and a cousin, Sr. Agnes Louise Stechschulte, also an Adrian Dominican Sister.
