Archbishop Weisenburger offers words of encouragement to students as year begins

DETROIT — The first bell of the school year has rung, bringing a sense of energy, hope, and the promise of new beginnings to every Catholic school student across Southeast Michigan.

When students return to school, they are not just stepping into another academic year, but returning to communities grounded in faith, tradition and shared purpose.

In a recent video message, Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger shared words of encouragement to returning students, teachers and faculty.

“As a new school year begins, I offer my prayers for all students, teachers, and school families,” Archbishop Weisenburger said. “May God bless you with wisdom, patience, and joy in learning throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit.”

Seniors at St. Mary Catholic Central High School in Monroe got an early jump on the school year on Aug. 20, with their “Senior Sunrise” tradition. Gathering as a class at 6:15 a.m., the Class of 2026 shared breakfast, fellowship, and the joy of being together as this year’s senior class.

Across the Archdiocese of Detroit, from Bishop Foley Catholic High School in Madison Heights to All Saints Catholic School in Canton and St. Anne Catholic School in Warren, students were welcomed back at the end of August with smiles, prayers, and a sense of renewal that comes with each fall.

Whether celebrating old traditions or simply reuniting with classmates and teachers, Catholic schools throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit are entering the new year with purpose and joy. All are committed to forming young minds and hearts in the love of Christ.
