Three CHSL boys soccer teams, 110 runners in the hunt for state championships

METRO DETROIT — The CHSL is assured that at least one member school will be fighting for a state championship in boys soccer.

On Wednesday (Oct. 30), Clarkston Everest (15-3-1) meets Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett (17-2-1) at 7 p.m. at Troy Athens in a Class D semifinal. Liggett is the CHSL boys soccer champion.

The same night, at 6 p.m., Macomb Lutheran North (15-3-1) tangles with Grosse Ile (22-2-1) at Parker Stadium in Howell in a Class C semifinal match.

The winners move on to the finals on Saturday (Nov. 2).

Saturday is also the date for 110 Catholic League runners — 45 boys, 65 girls — for the MHSAA boys and girls cross country finals at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

Thirteen schools who finished among the top three in their respective regionals last weekend will be sending a full team complement.

In Division 1, Novi Detroit Catholic Central won the regional at Willow Metropark. Warren De La Salle finished third at the Chandler Park Golf Course regional site.

In Division 2, Bloomfield Hills Marian won the Linden High School regional. Warren Regina was first and Macomb Lutheran North girls third in the Algonac regional. Dearborn Divine Child boys and girls teams finished in second place in their respective races at Lake Erie Metropark.

In Division 3, Madison Heights Bishop Foley won the boys regional, and Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett girls third at the Algonac location.

In addition, other runners of teams that did not wind up in the top three qualified for the individual races.

Noteworthy: Divine Child’s senior twins Anthony and Michael Hancock and freshman Michael Hegarty finished 1-2-3 in their regional. Sophomore Grace Zdankiewicz’s first-place effort led Regina’s regional triumph. Shrine’s senior Ellie Kendell won her regional race.
