WASHINGTON (OSV News) ─ President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance May 20 met Louis Prevost, the older brother of Pope Leo XIV, and his wife, Deborah Prevost, at the White House.
Margo Martin, Trump's special assistant and communications adviser, said in a post on X it was a "great meeting," and included a picture of the president, vice president, and the pope's brother and sister-in-law in the Oval Office.
Earlier the same day, Trump told reporters on Capitol Hill that he was looking forward to meeting Prevost, who has a history of posting favorably about Trump on social media and has described himself as a "MAGA type," an acronym for Trump's campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again."
"I like the pope and I like the pope's brother," Trump said. "Did you know that he lives in Florida? He's got MAGA, he's got Trump, and I look forward to getting him to the White House. I want to shake his hand. I want to give him a big hug."
Prevost also previously made a series of off-color social media posts, but suggested he would be more mindful of what he shared online now that his brother is the pope. He said during an interview on "Piers Morgan Uncensored," he would likely "tone it down."
"I don't need to create heat for him," he said of his brother.
In the same interview, Prevost suggested his brother was "much more liberal" than he was, but said he would not call him "woke," and speculated that as pontiff, his brother would play things "down the middle."
Prevost previously sat next to second lady Usha Vance and her husband, the vice president, during Pope Leo's inauguration Mass at the Vatican May 18.
