WATERFORD — Resilient.
That’s the word coach Drew Edson used to describe the performance of the University of Detroit Jesuit swimmers in the Catholic High School League finals March 7 at Kettering High School.
It was the Cubs' second championship in a row and the fourth in the last five years. You have to go back to 1966-67-68 and 1971 to find a similar streak of success.
“The kids came into this year understanding that we lost a lot of seniors from last year (Division 2 state champs),” said Edson, in his 10th year as coach. “It was hard for them to wrap their heads around the fact that they're going to need to step up. We had a couple of meetings when they were feeling down on themselves, but they're resilient. They worked their butts off.”
In the next-to-last event, the 100-yard breaststroke, junior Charlie Michael and sophomores Rock Thiam and Kaden Patterson in a furious 1-2-3 finish less than two seconds apart assured the victory for the Cubs.
U of D Jesuit’s scoring was accomplished by one senior, six juniors, five sophomores and one freshman.
