On the ice at the Plymouth Compuware Arena, Novi Detroit Catholic Central (25-3-1) employed a balanced offense and defense to successfully defend its Division 1 title by defeating Grandville, 5-2. The Shamrocks reached the finals by holding off an upset-minded Detroit U-D Jesuit squad, 4-3, in the semifinals.
Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice (24-6) won the Division 2 championship, 6-3, against Livonia Stevenson. The Warriors were 3-for-3 on the power play and displayed an awesome offense with five different players getting goals and 10 different players registering points.
And Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood (25-2-4) completed the trifecta, 4-0, over Houghton in Division 3. The Cranes applied the pressure from start to finish, limiting Houghton to just 13 shots on goal.
In the pool, Brother Rice and Cranbrook-Kingswood brought home an additional award for their bulging trophy cases. Rice scored in 13 of the 14 events to dominate its nearest competitor, Holland West Ottawa, by more than 100 points for the Division 1 championship at Eastern Michigan University.
Senior Jack Walsh set new state records in the butterfly and 200 intermediate.
Cranbrook won its second straight Division 3 crown at Oakland University’s natatorium, racking up 430 points compared with second-place Chelsea’s 299.5 points.
Earlier, on March 7, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep won its second consecutive Division 3 state title in competitive cheer.
There could be more for the CHSL to brag about as the state wraps up its winter sports activities this weekend and next.
Bloomfield Hills Marian, top-ranked in Class A girls basketball and season-long favorite to repeat as champion, Dearborn Divine Child in Class B and Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes in Class D are still in the hunt that ends with the finals March 21 at Michigan State’s Breslin Center.
In boys basketball, U-D Jesuit in Class A and high-flying, undefeated (22-0) Waterford Lakers in Class D entered their regional phase this week with high hopes of playing in the finals March 28, also at MSU.
The Lakers have the firepower to claim the first boys roundball state title in the school’s history to go alongside the three girls state championship trophies.
