A week for schools

Catholic schools across the archdiocese make time for faith, family, service and fun to celebrate this year’s Catholic Schools Week





Most schools will hold an open house sometime during the week (check with the school for date and time).

Here are some of the highlights of other activities schools that responded to a Michigan Catholic survey have planned:

Cabrini High School in Allen Park Among the events at Cabrini will be an Academic Olympics, at which students will compete in academic areas such as English, Science, Religion, Social Studies, and Math. Students will also engage in service projects such as making cards for veterans, the homebound and others, and preparing gift baskets for the parish’s homebound. And elderly nursing home members. In addition, students will hear a speakers on vocations and, at an all-school Mass, honor Cabrini parishioners who are public servants in the Allen Park community as well as the parish’s Cabrini Greeters.

Ladywood High School, Livonia Ladywood will kick-off Catholic Schools Week with a faculty and staff appreciation luncheon sponsored by the Moms Club. On Tuesday, the students will celebrate their school spirit with a pep rally in the afternoon followed by an all-school liturgy on Wednesday. The week will conclude with a half day and the Ladies Night Out in the evening. The Ladywood school community will provide canned goods and personal hygiene products for Angels’ Place – the local network of homes for the developmentally disabled — during the week.

De La Salle Collegiate,Warren  All De La Salle alumni who are parents of current  students have been invited to attend Mass and sit with their sons at the all-school Mass on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Also at the Mass, a current faculty member will be presented with the Lasallian Educator of the Year Award.





Cristo Rey High School, Detroit During Catholic Schools week students will take time each day during morning prayers and announcements to reflect on the blessings of Catholic education, and how it’s transforming the lives of students and their families in line with the school’s mission of preparing disadvantaged students from Detroit to succeed in college.

St. Isaac Jogues School, St. Clair Shores Among other activities, students in each class will collect new baby items to benefit Catholic Services of Macomb’s Project Hope, a crisis pregnancy support program.

St. Anne School, Warren A week of fun events for students and their families is planned, including an after-school skating party, special projects and specially themed days, with parents invited to come to the school for its science fair, art show, forensics night, and book fair.

St. Germaine School, St. Clair Shores Specially themed days throughout the week will include once that emphasize faith, service, fun and academics. A school-wide service project will benefit Wigs for Kids.





Our Lady Star of the Sea, Grosse Pointe Woods  Students will be bringing in grocery items for donation to a food pantry, and enjoy a morning bagel sale with proceeds going to Most Holy Trinity School in Detroit. Among other activities the U of D band will also come to perform for the student body

St. Mary School, Mount Clemens Students will bring in nonperishable food items for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and make special placemats for local hospitals and nursing centers, as well as take part in various fun activities throughout the week.

St. Anselm School, Dearborn Heights A week full of faith, academics and service is planned, as well as the making of special thank-you gifts for parishioners for their support to the school.

Our Lady of Sorrows School, Farmington Special events and activities throughout the week will seek to express the school’s focus on learning about faith, striving for high academic standards, and serving our community, including one to benefit the Dominicans’ Retirement Fund.

St. Mary/McCormick Academy, Port Huron Besides hosting Sunday Mass on Jan. 29 in uniform and lending their hands as lectors, altar servers and ushers, they will also mark Catholic Schools Week with a “Jeopardy”-style quiz competition to prepare for the Academic Olympics. There will be a visit from the Port Huron Piano Trio, as well as an ice-skating trip and a party. Students will also assist with the Cheers to the Children fundraiser on Feb. 4.
