Archdiocese names new head of finance

Detroit — The Archdiocese of Detroit on Monday announced that Richard Austin, an executive who since 2009 has overseen the financial restructuring of the archdiocese, has been named its director of finance and administration.

Austin, 60, will now fill a role equivalent to that of chief financial officer (CFO) at the local Church. Reporting to Moderator of the Curia Monsignor Robert McClory, Austin will head up efforts including accounting services, auditing, budget management, properties management and investments.

“Rick’s assistance in our restructuring efforts thus far has been invaluable,” said Archbishop Allen Vigneron in a statement accompanying the announcement. “I am confident the archdiocese will benefit greatly from his service as director of finance and administration.”

Austin’s resume includes a number of senior management positions in private, public and not-for-profit entities, including tenures as CFS, controller, division accounting manager and restructuring advisor. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan in Dearborn.

Austin also is accredited as a certified public accountant, certified treasury professional, and as a certified fraud examiner.

Austin succeeds Daniel Oliver, a 26-year veteran of the finance and administration department who himself will move to the role of special projects coordinator in the department.

Austin and his wife, Patricia, are members of St. Aidan Parish in Livonia. They have four grown children.

“I am very humbled to join the entire team dedicated to realizing Archbishop Vigneron’s mission of sharing Christ in and through the Church,” Austin said in a statement.
