The following story is reproduced from archived microfilm of The Michigan Catholic's edition of March 11, 1965. A priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit, Fr. Jerome Fraser, wrote this gripping first-person account 50 years ago this week, just after returning from the historic civil rights march led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Ala. According to Michigan Catholic lore, the paper's editor at the time, then-Fr. William Kienzle, tore up the planned front page of the March 11 edition at the last minute to make room for Fr. Fraser's account. History is glad he did. (Note: Small sections of the story missing from the images have been filled in below.)
