Bernyce Edwards

Bernyce Edwards, who was active in Church affairs at the parish, vicariate and archdiocesan levels, died Aug. 22 at St. John Hospital, Detroit, after a brief illness. She was 84.

Born May 19, 1926 in Detroit to Steve and Julia Edwards, she attended Cass Technical High School, Detroit; Nazareth College, Kalamazoo; and Wayne State University, Detroit.

Over the years her service to the Church also included membership on the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council, which she also served as moderator, and the Tracking Committee established to monitor implementation of the Together in Faith process.

She was also a St. John Senior Health trustee and a member of the board of the Casa Richard Academy.

Bob McBrayer, who followed Ms. Edwards as moderator of the APC, said, “I worked with her for probably eight years on the APC, and she was one of the most gracious people I ever had the privilege of working with, and one of the finest people I ever had the opportunity to know. It was just a pleasure to be with her.”

She is survived by nephews Allen Edwards III and Steven Edwards; and by nieces Alisha and Aleena Edwards.

A funeral Mass was celebrated last Saturday, Sept. 4, by Fr. Michael Nkwachukwu at Good Shepherd Church, Detroit. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Detroit.
