Bro. Joseph A. Shubitowski, SJ, died May 29 at his residence in Cleveland, Ohio. He was 76.
Born Jan. 21, 1935 in Detroit to Bernard and Eleanor (Schulte) Shubitowski, he attended St. Cecilia elementary and high schools in Detroit. He entered the Society of Jesus March 13, 1954, and professed his final vows Aug. 15, 1965.
He had many occupations during his career, mostly serving at Jesuit institutions in Ohio, but was also electrician at University of Detroit Jesuit High School from 1961-64; and from 1987-90 he worked in building rehab in the Core City Neighborhood in Detroit’s inner-city.
Bro. Shubitowski also served years at Jesuit institutions in Africa – eight years in Sudan and six in Tanzania.
He returned to Detroit from 1997-2006, doing grounds and maintenance work at U of D Jesuit High School, and at Manresa Retreat House in Bloomfield Hills.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Catherine Howe, Eleanor DiMartino, Dorothy Kruszyna, Rosemary Porterfield and Ann Jung; and is survived by two brothers, Bernard and Paul.
A funeral Mass was celebrated June 3 in the chapel of Colombiere Center, Clarkston. Interment was in Colombiere Center Cemetery.
