Celebrations in order for four double-winners in CHSL championships

Perhaps a parade down Lahser Road would be appropriate for these Bloomfield Hills neighbors, Brother Rice and Marian.

Each won two Catholic League spring championships. Rice claimed the boys lacrosse crown for the 15th year in a row and the baseball championship for the sixth straight time.

Marian dominated girls tennis for the ninth consecutive year and girls soccer.

Celebrations are also in order for another pair of double winners: Clarkston Everest Collegiate, boys golf for the third straight year and girls tennis, and Madison Heights Bishop Foley, girls soccer for the first time since 2003 and baseball.

Here’s a roundup of spring sports CHSL championships:

BOYS LACROSSE – Senior Jack Kelly fired in seven goals to pace Brother Rice to its 15th consecutive Division A title, 15-10, over Novi Detroit Catholic Central. In Division B, Ann Arbor Fr. Gabriel Richard scored five unanswered third-quarter goals en route to an 11-4 victory over Dearborn Divine Child for the Fighting Irish’s first league championship.

GIRLS LACROSSE – Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood snapped Marian’s string of 10 straight Division I titles, 19-9. Livonia Ladywood successfully defended its Division II crown, getting by Warren Regina, 10-7.

GIRLS TENNIS – Marian won all four singles matches and two doubles for its ninth straight Division I championship. Korrin Dering, Mia Schwartz, Lauren Petosky and Gigi Kalabat were singles winners, and the pairs of Miriam Akkary-Clair Stechow and Kate Chinions-Ariana Kotsakis took their doubles matches. The Division II trophy went to the co-op team of Clarkston Everest Collegiate, Oakland Christian and Lutheran Northwest.

BOYS GOLF – Four seniors led Catholic Central to the Division I title: Dyllan Skinner (69), James Piot (73), Sean Sooch (73) and Sam Holland (75). In Division II, Everest Collegiate won its third straight crown. Joey McMahon shot 74 and earned medalist honors. Mitch Lowney was a stroke behind at 75, J. C. James had an 85, Nick Korns 87.

GIRLS SOCCER – Grace Kinna found the net to end a marathon eight-round shootout to give Marian a 1-0 victory over Regina. It was Marian’s third Division I title in the last four years. Jillian Ramos scored from 40 yards out to give Bishop Foley a 1-0 win over Royal Oak Shrine for its first Division II/III title since 2003.

SOFTBALL – Regina pounded Farmington Hills Mercy, 14-6, to take its second A-B title in the last three years. Melina Livingston and Meghan Berlin each smacked three-run homers to lead the offense. In the C-D championship game, junior Hannah Davies threw a no-hitter, with 17 strikeouts, to lead Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes to a 5-0 win over Wixom St. Catherine.

BOYS TRACK – Warren De La Salle claimed its first Division A-B title in 21 years. Seniors Kevin Lee won both dashes and Allen Stritzinger both hurdles races. Detroit Loyola won its third straight C-D crown. Harris Hunter won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races.

GIRLS TRACK – Junior Allie Filiatraut won the shot put and discus to lead a sweep of four fields events, setting the stage for Divine Child’s sixth win of the Division A-B championship in the last eight years. Shrine took the C-D title. Kennedy Kilgore won the 100- and 200-meter sprints, and Ellie Kendall won both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs.

BASEBALL – Brother Rice won its sixth straight A-B championship, 3-1, over Catholic Central. In a pitcher’s duel, Senior Alex Kuster’s one-hitter bested CC’s Johnny Lobbia’s five-hitter. Senior Justin Campbell pitched a 2-hit complete game, striking out 12, to lead Bishop Foley to a 9-1 win over AA Fr. Gabriel Richard for its fifth C-D championship in last six years.
