CHSL boys and girls in action on several fronts in the week ahead

METRO DETROIT — Catholic League boys and girls teams will be in action on several fronts in the week ahead.

CHSL boys basketball

The boys wind up the CHSL basketball schedule with championship contests Saturday, Feb. 29, at the University of Detroit Mercy Calihan Hall.

At 5 p.m., a pair of Intersection 1 rivals, Marine City Cardinal Mooney (13-4) and Riverview Gabriel Richard (17-1), meet for the Cardinal trophy. Both moved up from the semifinals, Mooney getting past Clarkston Everest, 51-40, and Richard handily disposing of Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood, 75-50.

Gabriel Richard, which is riding a 12-game win streak, won both times against Mooney during the regular season, once by nine points and the second by six.

At 7 p.m., Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep (17-1) will attempt to break the unprecedented stranglehold University of Detroit Jesuit has had for the last seven consecutive years on the Central/AA (Bishop) trophy.

Both squads are coming in off easy semifinal wins. The Cubs overwhelmed Detroit Loyola, 70-34, and  the Eaglets did likewise to Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice, 74-40.

St. Mary’s won both Central encounters with Jesuit, 60-50 and 68-60.
