Cloistered Dominican makes first profession, invites popes to attend

SrFarmington Hills — On Aug. 2, Sr. Dominic Marie Thorn, OP, made her profession of first vows as a cloistered Dominican nun of the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament in Farmington Hills.

Sr. Thorn made her profession into the hands of prioress Sr. Mary Peter Fox, OP. The main celebrant and homilist was Sr. Thorn’s former spiritual director during her time as a student at Florida State University, Fr. Eddie Jones.

Sr. Thorn, who recently turned 28, studied religion and languages while at Florida State. She used her language proficiency to write an invitation to both Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI to attend her profession.

While she has not yet heard from Pope Francis, the retired pope, whose letter Sr. Thorn wrote in German, sent her a response and a medallion.

Sr. Thorn also wrote an invitation in French to the Master of the Order, Fr. Bruno Cadore, OP, who is of French nationality. While he, too, could not attend the profession, Fr. Cadore did respond with a letter complimenting her mastery of the French language.

More than 100 people attended the profession, many of whom were Sr. Thorn’s family and friends. In another three years, Sr. Thorn will take her final vows.
