Cristo Rey school building Cristo Rey High School has agreed to purchase the former Holy Redeemer High School building in southwest Detroit.

DETROIT — Detroit Cristo Rey High School has been leasing the former Holy Redeemer High School building near the city’s Mexicantown since it opened in 2008.

Now, thanks to a deal between Holy Redeemer Parish and school that was disclosed last week, Cristo Rey will own the historic, 63,000-sqare-foot building that housed Holy Redeemer High School from 1928 to 2005. The high school has agreed to pay $2.284 million for the building.

Archbishop Allen Vigneron was pleased that the two institutions would be neighbors for the foreseeable future.

“All of those involved in Detroit Cristo Rey can be justly proud for what they do to fulfill their mission of providing an excellent Catholic education to young people of limited means,” said Archbishop Vigneron. “This school has truly been a blessing not just to its students, but also to the archdiocese and to southwest Detroit. We are very glad for Cristo Rey’s continued relationship with Holy Redeemer Parish as both institutions persist in the mission to bring Christ to the city.”Cristo Rey High School, the only co-ed Catholic high school in Detroit, has about 250 students. It has gained notoriety, along with two dozen other Cristo Rey schools nationwide, for its corporate work-study program that allows students to gain hands-on employment experience as a requirement for graduation.

The Detroit school also boasts that of its first two graduating classes, every student has been accepted to a college or university.
