Livonia — Various ministries of the Livonia-based Felician Sisters gathered and donated 800 pounds of apples Oct. 18 in partnership with Forgotten Harvest, which will deliver the apples to nearly 280 area agencies.

The apples were gathered by volunteers from behind Livonia Ladywood High School, where an orchard is all that remains of the farmland purchased by the Felician Sisters when they arrived in Michigan in 1926. The sisters were joined by members representing Ladywood High School, St. Mary Child Care Center, Madonna University, Montessori Center of Our Lady, Angela Hospice, Senior Clergy Village and Marywood Nursing Center.

“All of us at the Felician Ministries on our Livonia campus are thrilled to collaborate together on this project,” said Ladywood president Karen Moore. “It provides us an opportunity to show our commitment to continuing the work the Sisters began and to be one community together.”

In addition to collecting and donating nearly 4,000 apples, volunteers also planted an apple tree in honor of the Felician Sisters’ 140th anniversary in North America.

The Felician Sisters plan to make the apple donation an annual event. Those interested in supporting the orchard can donate to Ladywood High School, Attn: Apple Orchard, 14680 Newburg Road, Livonia, MI 48154.
