Four CHSL student-athletes to receive MHSAA awards

East Lansing — Four Catholic League student-athletes have been selected by the Michigan High School Athletic Association to receive scholarships through its Scholar-Athlete Award program.

Michael Kenney, of Detroit U-D Jesuit, Stephen Luckoff and Francis Misra, both of Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood, and Dane Miller, of Dearborn Divine Child, will each receive $1,000 awards in a ceremony during halftime of the Class C boys basketball final, March 28, at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing.

Kenney ran three seasons of varsity cross country and will run his fourth of track and field this spring. He volunteers for a number of projects and services, including Gleaners Community Food Bank, Angela Hospice Home Care and Special Olympics. Kenney is undecided where he will attend college, but will study English and theology.

Luckoff played four seasons of varsity soccer and will play his fourth of varsity lacrosse this spring. He served as president and lead facilitator of Bridge the Divide Club uniting those living in Detroit and its suburbs. Luckoff will attend the University of Michigan and study finance.

Misra is a four-year member of the varsity swim team and helped the Cranes win the Division 3 state title last year. He founded a team for the National Kidney Foundation walk that raised more than $18,000, and also recruited a combined 180 walkers for multiple fundraising events. He will attend the University of Michigan and study film production.

Miller ran four years of varsity cross country and will run for the fourth season this spring on varsity track and field. He attained AP Scholar with Honor and National Merit Scholar Commended Student recognitions and achieved a perfect score (36) on his ACT college entrance exam. Misra will attend the University of Michigan and study electrical engineering.

They were among seven CHSL student-athletes nominated for the awards from more than 1,600 applications. The others were Riley Blair of Dearborn Divine Child; Bridget R. Dewan of Wixom St. Catherine of Siena; and James Thibodeau of Clarkston Everest Collegiate.

Past CHSL award recipients include, in 1998, Alexzandra Nicole Shade of Farmington Hills Mercy, and Stephanie Cleland of Madison Heights Bishop Foley; in 2001, Antonette Bitonti of Pontiac Notre Dame, and Christopher Weier of Warren De La Salle; and in 2002, Brian Murphy of Birmingham Hills Brother Rice.

Also, in 2006, Elizabeth Louise Tepe of Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood, and Peter E. Loy of Warren De La Salle; in 2008, Megan Novak of Farmington Hills Mercy; and in 2009, Kieran Scott and Patrick Vaughn of Warren De La Salle; Abigail Cohen and Daniel DuComb of Bloomfield Hills Cranbook-Kingswood, and Rachel Stattler of Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart.
