First-year Head Coach John Urbanic also encouraged his Ann Arbor Fr. Gabriel Richard squad to jump high and throw far. “They make me look smart.”

Heeding his advice, the Irish parlayed eight first places for 80 of their final total of 120 points to win their seventh consecutive CHSL C-D Girls track championship Tuesday afternoon at Livonia Ladywood.

The Irish fended off challenges from Royal Oak Shrine (95), Allen Park Cabrini (87) and Madison Heights Bishop Foley (86). Richard’s strength in the distance races was too much for the speed of Shrine and overall balance of Cabrini.

A pair of freshmen led the way for the Irish. Kora Dreffs won the discus and shot put, while Andrea Bodary won the 1600 and 3200 races and ran a leg on the winning 4x800 meter relay. In those three races, and the 400 meter dash,  Richard outscored Shrine 50-7 and Cabrini 50-23.

Senior Caitlin Brown won the long jump and 400 meter dash.

Senior Nicole Lennon won both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles for Cabrini.  Another freshman, Cabrini’s Jordan Powell, won the 800 meter race, finished second to Bodary in the 1600 and third in the 3200.

Cristo Rey’s Summer Lewis and Jazmene Floyd placed 1-2 in the 200 meter dash, and Lewis was second in the long jump with a 15' 5" effort.
