Fr. Robert L. Russell, SS

Fr. Robert Louis Russell, SS, died June 16. He was 81. He was a member of the Society of St. Sulpice.

Fr. Russell was ordained for the Archdiocese of Detroit on June 4, 1955, and served two years as an assistant pastor at St. Angela Parish in Roseville.

He entered the Society of St. Sulpice in 1957, and was then assigned to serve on the faculty of St. Joseph College in Mountain View, Calif, followed by St. Charles College in Catonsville, Md. He received his Licentiate in Sacred Theology. from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1961.

In 1961 he joined the faculty at Seminario Conciliar in Merida, Mexico. After two years on the faculty there, Fr. Russell served for 33 years as pastor of Holy Family Church in Merida (1963-1996).

In 1964 Fr. Russell founded the Apostolic Bible College in Merida. He also was a founder of the Community of the Mother of God (now known as Missioners of the Mother of God) in 1980.

A funeral Mass was celebrated and Fr. Russell was buried June 17 in Panteon Jardines del Recuerdo, Merida, Mexico.
