DETROIT ─ The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit is hosting an organ festival with three special programs in honor of the 100th anniversary installation of its organ.

“Celebrating Our Casavant Organ’s Centennial Season” begins Sunday, March 15, at 4 p.m. with a concert for organ and orchestra, with Dr. Sarah Simko as organist and Dr. Horst Bucholz, director of sacred music for the Archdiocese of Detroit, as conductor.

“In 1925, the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament commissioned Casavant Freres – one of North America’s finest and most respected organ builders – to create an instrument worthy of Detroit’s mother church,” Dr. Bucholz said. “The result was a beautifully crafted pipe organ whose tonal design reflects the artistry and liturgical ideals of its time.

“For a century, this organ has shaped the spiritual life of our community,” Dr. Buchholz added. “It has supported the Church’s chant, elevated choirs, and proclaimed the Gospel in sound at thousands of liturgies. Its voice has accompanied the faithful through moments of joy and sorrow, celebration and contemplation. It has also served as a cultural treasure for the wider community, inspiring generations of international organists, students and concertgoers.”

The cathedral will also host concerts on Sunday, April 26 at 4 p.m. with Dr. Fred Hohman, sponsored by the Casavant Organ Company; and Monday, May 11 at 7 p.m. with Professor Nicole Keller, co-hosted by the Detroit AGO Chapter.
