DETROIT — Detroit’s rich jazz and gospel traditions came together with the beauty of the Catholic liturgy on Sunday, Sept. 6, as the Detroit Black Catholic Ministry and St. Moses the Black Parish celebrated the annual Holy Mass with a Musical Setting to Honor the Culture of Jazz in Detroit.
Since 2021, the celebration has brought together traditional jazz instrumentation, inspiring vocals and soulful prayer to honor music's role in deepening faith and strengthening the community.
During his homily, Fr. Tyrone Robinson reflected on the Christian call to love, reminding the faithful that love is more than a feeling; it is a decision to recognize the dignity of every person as a child of God.
“Love your neighbor; that was not a request. It’s a commandment,” Fr. Robinson said.
Drawing on the day’s Scripture readings and the witness of the prophets, Fr. Robinson encouraged the faithful to choose the way of Christ, allowing the Gospel to guide how they see and love their neighbors.
“Let us make love a reality, not a feeling, but a decision,” he said.
