Detroit — Shortly after storming the Catholic League record books, the Mercy Marlins won their fourth consecutive Division 2 state swimming and diving championship at Eastern Michigan University on Nov. 20.
The Marlins won five events, racked up two state records, and posted a team score of 398 points, topping second place Holland (276) and third-place Birmingham Groves (197.5).
Nikki Barczak, who anchored Mercy’s Catholic League win, played the same role at the states.
Taylor Steffl, Elliott Schinella, Sato Kakihara and Barczak won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.32 — a time which set the Division 2 record. Olivia Samoray Kakihara Maria Bargardi and Barczak also set a Division 2 record in the 400-yard freestyle relay, recording a time of 3:27.24. Bargardi, Hailie Zulch, Steffl and Schinella also won the 200-yard medley with a score of 1:46.06, topping Holland in the event by just .06 seconds.
Barczak recorded the top score in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in 23.24 seconds. She also put in the top performance in the 100-yard race with a time of 50.44.
In Division 1 swimming at Oakland University’s pool, it was Marian’s Jaynie Pulte who made a splash, winning an individual title. Pulte set a Division 1 record in the 50-yard freestyle, achieving a 23.24 time.
Pulte also was a part of Marian’s record-setting medley relay team, anchoring teammates Haley Johnson, Claire Schelski and Clare Nienstedt as they swam to a 1:46.27 in the 200-yard race.
The Mustangs took third place in the state, topped only by Saline (307) and Holland West Ottawa (221). Marian scored 194.
