Notre Dame Prep dominates Powers for fourth lacrosse title

Pontiac -- Brandon and Kyle Beauregard weren’t going to let their team lose three games in a row to Flint Powers, especially not on their turf.

“We knew this was at home we weren’t going to let them beat us at home again,” Brandon Beauregard, the Notre Dame Prep senior attacker, said. “We had to come out hot and this is for the Catholic League Championship and this is the fourth one in a row we had to defend it.”

The Beauregard Brothers came out on fire, recording a point on every goal except for one that their team scored, leading  to a 13-1 victory over Flint Powers. The win marks Notre Dame Prep's fourth straight Div. II Catholic League Championship.

“We lost to them twice already this season so we knew we had to come out fast and score quick goals,” Brandon said. “We had the lead and just kept it the whole game.”

Notre Dame Prep struck first off a goal from senior midfielder Paul Nardone when he received a pass from Kyle Beauregard from behind the net to put the Fighting Irish up 1-0.

Powers responded with an offensive attack, hitting two posts, but couldn’t capitalize, ending the first quarter with Notre Dame Prep up 1-0.

“Defensively you just got to grind,” Ben Ingram, Notre Dame Prep head coach said. “The post is the goalie's best friend, so we got that. We just had to keep working and slow it down defensively and make sure the best rest for our defense is a good offense. We slowed down and I thought we did real well today.”

Coming out of the first quarter, Powers fell into their patented 3-3 Zone, which gave the Fighting Irish troubles in their first two meetings with the Chargers.

“We had seen them a couple times earlier this year and we knew they were going to run that compact 3-3 zone,” Ingram said. “We worked against it and you just got to work around it and get some outside shots. Once we were able to shoot from the outside we were able to open it up.”

Notre Dame Prep did just that. Brandon Beauregard scored off of a pass from his brother Kyle with 5:18 remaining in the second quarter, and then Brandon returned the favor, setting up Kyle who did a swim move and scored with his left hand to put the Fighting Irish up 3-0 with 1:15 remaining.

With under a minute to play, Notre Dame Prep added another goal when senior Joe Gifford hit a Powers attacker, stole the ball and threw a long pass to Brandon for his second goal of the game putting the Fighting Irish up 4-0 right before half.

In the second half, Notre Dame Prep continued to pour on the attack, adding two more goals less than three minutes in when sophomore Alex Naseef scored off a pass from Brandon and seconds later, Brandon scored his third of the game.

With 5:11 remaining in the third quarter, the Beauregard Brothers connected again. Kyle scored off a pass from Brandon, putting Notre Dame Prep up 7-0. Seconds later, Brandon received a pass from Kyle and scored his fourth goal to put the Fighting Irish up by eight.

“As brothers, it’s funny,” Ingram said. “They’re the hardest critics on themselves. The way they work together it’s something else. They know where each other’s supposed to be, they know where each others going to be. They play off each other in a big way and the way that they’re playing obviously raises the teams play.”

Powers got on the board with just over a minute left when senior midfielder Gino Scarpelli scored off of a long shot to end the third quarter at 8-1.

Junior David Cedras, both Beauregards, junior midfielder David Pagnucco and Nardone each added goals to end the game 13-1.

“This was big,” Brandon said, “We know we can play with anyone in the state right now.”
