Old and new faces among boys and girls cross country champs

There were familiar faces accepting the winners' trophies at this year’s CHSL boys and girls cross country championship.

Novi Detroit Catholic Central, for the 28th time in the last 45 years – which correlates to as long as coach Tony Magni has been at CC – won the Division 1/2 boys title.

Dearborn Divine Child won the girls Division 2/3 crown for the 10th time.

There were a couple of newcomers among the winners: Ann Arbor Greenhills, in its first year of eligibility competing in the CHSL tournament since it joined the league two years ago, won the Division 3/4 boys race. Allen Park Cabrini will clear a spot for the Division 3/4 girls trophy in its collection for the first time.

The Shamrocks’ top five runners finished 4-5-8-12-13 for its winning 42-point total, nine ahead of archrival Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice.

Junior Luke Perelli led CC, followed by junior Alexander Dugas, senior Clayton Molinari, junior Mitchel Horn and senior Aaron Maloney.

Greenhills' quintet placed in the top 10 to readily outpace the field. Leading the pack was senior Vincent Vermeulen, followed by senior Andrew Angold-Stephens, junior Alex Allman, senior Jake Zell and junior Alan Atkinsmith.

On the girls side, Divine Child’s top five consisted of senior Kaitlin Murray, senior Audrey Renaud, sophomore Erin Hegarty, freshman Lyndsey Aho and junior Brooke Aho.

Cabrini had three ninth-graders in its top five: Lily Heath, senior Mikayla Trumbla, sisters Ania Ghazzawi and Angel Ghazzawi and sophomore Alana Maffesoli.
