CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Across the Archdiocese of Detroit, Catholics will observe the most solemn day of the liturgical calendar by commemorating the final hours before Jesus’ death on the cross.

One popular devotion, the Stations of the Cross, will take on a life-sized dimension on Good Friday, March 29, at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township.

The 330-acre cemetery is home to 14 larger-than-life bronze statues depicting the suffering and death of Jesus. The cemetery will host its annual Good Friday Stations of the Cross processional starting at 4 p.m. in Section 21.

“This event commemorates the passion and crucifixion of Jesus and offers a unique and beautiful experience for the devoted Christian,” the cemetery said in a news release announcing the event. “Surrounded by nature and the fellowship of others, the event offers a contemplative atmosphere punctuated by larger-than-life depictions of Christ’s last day on earth, unlike any other in Metro Detroit.”

The statues, crafted in Carrara, Italy, are one of just three sets in the world.

Fr. Michael Quaine of St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Sterling Heights will lead the devotional, guiding pilgrims through each of the 14 stations. The event will take place rain or shine.

“It is truly a unique experience that is heart-changing for those that attend,” the release stated.

Founded in 1963, Resurrection Cemetery is located at 18201 Clinton River Road in Clinton Township. In addition to its beautiful grounds and mausoleums, the cemetery is home to an array of sacred art and iconography. The cemetery is part of the Mt. Elliott Cemetery Association, whose cemeteries around the Detroit area have served families since 1841.
