DETROIT — Two Detroit parishes will host special musical performances in the coming weeks celebrating the Church’s rich musical heritage. Then, later this summer, area Catholics and music aficionados will be treated to a special performance by members of the Sistine Chapel Choir.

Next week, the National Association of Negro Musicians (NAHM) is hosting its 106th annual convention in Detroit, which will take place July 12-17 at the Renaissance Center.

As part of the convention, on July 12 at 8 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, the Cathedral Cultural Series will host “New Century Competition for Organ,” sponsored by the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc., which is the country’s oldest organization dedicated to the preservation, encouragement, and advocacy of all genres of the music of Black Americans.

The following week, Friday, July 18 at 7:30 p.m., Old St. Mary's Parish in Greektown Detroit will host the Schola Cantorum of the London Oratory School, who will perform “Sacred Treasures of England, Spain and Italy,” a concert of sacred music sung by the boys of the London Oratory Schola, featuring works from Renaissance composers such as Byrd, Tallis, Victoria, Guerrero, Gabrielli, Monteverdi and Palestrina.

Both events are free and open to the public.
