Msgr. Ronald Browne, a Detroit priest who formerly worked as moderator of the curia for the Diocese of Marquette, shows Michigan Catholic managing editor Mike Stechschulte a map of the state of Michigan for the first time. Stechschulte, incredulous, replied, “Has that been there the whole time?”We did not intend to offend anyone by leaving off Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The decision was simply a graphical one, and we love our “Yoopers” — now officially part of Webster’s Dictionary, we might add — as much as anyone. Despite the fact The Michigan Catholic covers only the Archdiocese of Detroit and southeast Michigan, our name does reflect our entire great state.
We also didn’t take into account that many readers have ties to the Upper Peninsula, whether through school, family, former homestead, or simply as a proud Michigander. As a mea culpa, we’re restoring the U.P. to its proper place in our main logo atop Page 1 and anywhere the full Michigan Catholic nameplate is represented, including at www.themichigancatholic.com.
We hope you enjoy the new features, and we’ll see you in Escanaba this summer.
