Sister Electa Herringer, IHM

Sr. Electa Herringer, IHM, died June 6, in the IHM Health Care Center in Monroe. She was 94 and had been a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, for 74 years.





Sr. Herringer was one of six children of Adam and Mary (Schmitt) Herringer. She was born on March 8, 1918, in Flint and given the name Electa.

She attended St. Michael Elementary and High School in Flint. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1938, taking the religious name of Sr. Mary Simon.

Sr. Herringer earned a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College. She taught in formal education for 31 years at St. Martin, Our Lady of Help and Epiphany, Detroit; St. Mary, Mt. Clemens, Our Lady of Lake Huron, Harbor Beach; Holy Cross, Marine City; St. Anne, Warren; St. Bede, Southfield; St. Mary, Mt. Morris; St. Michael, Flint, and St. Philip, Battle Creek.

After a year of teaching high school at St. Philip’s in Battle Creek, Sr. Herringer began clerical work in the high school office.

She was in this ministry for the next 34 years as clerical/attendance; supportive and office staff, clerical assistant and library aide.

She retired in 2007 and returned to the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe, entering the Health Care Center where she resided until her death. She had been under Mercy Memorial Hospice Care of Monroe.

She is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Bernard, Placidus and Patrick, and her sisters, Sr. Romilda, IHM, and Rita (Mrs. Theodoroff).

Her funeral Mass was June 8 at the IHM Motherhouse Chapel.
