Sr. Alice Flanagan, IHM, died Dec. 31, at her home, the IHM Sisters’ Motherhouse in Monroe. She was 79.
Sr. Flanagan was one of six children, four girls and two boys, of Harry and Anna (Everett) Flanagan. She was born Nov. 28, 1931 in Detroit and given the name Alice. She attended several elementary schools in Detroit, including St. Martin, and graduated from St. Martin High School. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1949, taking the religious name of Sr. Marie Kyran.
Sr. Flanagan earned a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College and a master’s degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. She taught in formal education for 25 years at St. Mary, Monroe; St. Raymond, St. Charles, Holy Redeemer and Our Lady of Good Counsel, Detroit; St. Mary, Wayne; St. Philip, Battle Creek; St. Peter Claver, Mobile, Ala.; and Holy Ghost, Albuquerque, N.M.
From 1970 to 1980, she set aside teaching and returned to the IHM Motherhouse to ministered for the IHM community as a driver for the sisters, along with secretarial work. She returned to teaching and, after eight years at Our Lady of Good Counsel, returned to the Motherhouse as director of transportation. In 1990 she actively retired, assisting in areas around the Motherhouse.
In 2007 she entered the Health Care Center, where she resided until her death. She had been under Mercy Memorial Hospice Care of Monroe.
Sr. Flanagan is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Rosemary Rieschl, Sr. Geraldine (Patricia Ann), and Anne; and her brothers, Charles and Harry.
Her funeral was at the IHM Motherhouse Chapel on Jan. 6. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse campus.
