Sr. Catherine (Florita) Crittenden, IHM

Sr. Catherine Crittenden, IHM, formerly known as Sr. Florita Crittenden, IHM, died Feb. 20 at the IHM Sisters’ Motherhouse in Monroe. She was 93.

She was born Delia Catherine on Oct. 14, 1917, in Walkerville, Ontario, one of five children of William and Delia (Jones) Crittenden. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in Monroe, in 1934, taking the religious name of Sr. Florita.

Sr. Crittenden earned a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College, and  taught for 34 years at St. Charles, Newport;: Holy Redeemer, Holy Rosary and St. Vincent, all in Detroit; Our Lady of Lourdes, River Rouge; St. Thomas the Apostle, Ann Arbor; St. Cyprian, Riverview; and St. Luke, Flint.

She spent 13 years at St. Martin Parish in Detroit, and was involved in pastoral ministry to the sick and elderly and as pastoral associate. Later, she became librarian at St. David School, Detroit, followed by five years as receptionist at the IHM Northeast Province Office in Taylor.

In 1994 she retired to the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe. At the time of her death she was under the care of Mercy Memorial Hospice Care of Monroe.

Sr. Crittenden is survived by a brother, Dale, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Rosemary Brophy, and two brothers, Theodore and Carl

Her funeral was Feb. 24 at the IHM Motherhouse. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery on the motherhouse campus.
