Sr. Elaine Garety, IHM, 91, died March 12 at Mercy Memorial Hospital, Monroe. She was a resident of the IHM Motherhouse.
Sr. Garety was one of 13 children — four boys, and nine girls — of James and Matilda (Meyer) Garety. She was born in Cass City, Mich., on Oct. 6, 1922, and given the name Dorothy. Sr. Garety attended Stone Elementary School in Sanilac County and graduated from Cass City High School. She entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1941 and received the religious name of Sr. Elaine.
Sr. Garety earned a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College and a master’s degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. She taught in formal education for 52 years at Holy Redeemer and Immaculata High Schools, Detroit; St. Mary, Mt. Clemens; St. Patrick, Wyandotte; St. Mary, Wayne; SS. Peter and Paul, Ionia; and Nativity Elementary School in Hollywood, Fla.
In 1995 she retired to Holy Redeemer Convent and retired to the IHM Motherhouse in 2001.
Sr. Garety is survived by her brother, William (Dorothy) and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters: Martha (Sr. Priscilla, IHM), Genevieve (former Sr. Patricia, IHM), Helen Sweeney, Gertrude Garety, Beatrice Sweeney, Marie Murray, Caroline Garety and Albina Sweeney and brothers: John, Peter and Patrick Garety.
Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated in the IHM Motherhouse Chapel on March 19. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus. Memorials may be made to the IHM Retirement Fund, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe, MI 48162-7909.
