Sr. Elizabeth (Lorraine) Bowling, IHM

BowlingSr. Elizabeth (Lorraine) Bowling, IHM, died Feb. 20 in the IHM Health Care Center in Monroe. She was 97.

Sr. Bowling was one of 10 children, two boys and eight girls, of Joseph and Agnes (Ballard) Bowling. She was born on Oct. 3, 1916, in Bardstown, Ky. She attended St. Bernard and St. Mary Elementary Schools and graduated from St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1936 and received the religious name of Sr. Lorraine.

Sr. Bowling earned a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College and master’s degree from the University of Detroit. She taught in formal education for 33 years at Gesu, Holy Redeemer, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Vincent, St. Agnes, and Christ the King, Detroit; St. Frederick, Pontiac; and St. Mary, Lorain, Ohio.

Sr. Bowling ministered at Marygrove College for an additional 18 years in various areas: book store manager, receptionist at Madame Cadillac Hall; in the business office; tutoring and testing in mathematics and as a resource person for the mathematics department. Sr. Bowling retired in 1990 and for the next 13 years was bursar at Marygrove Convent. She retired to the Motherhouse in Monroe in 2003.

Sr. Bowling is survived by her sisters, Jeanette Hollinden and Pauline Schulte, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph and Richard, and sisters, Mary (Mrs. Francis Williams), Gertrude (former Sr. Elizabeth Ann, IHM), Catherine, Kathleen and Agnes Bowling.

The Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated in the IHM Motherhouse Chapel on Feb. 25. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus. Memorials to the IHM Retirement Fund, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe, MI 48162-7909.
