Sr. Elizabeth Mary Larson, IHM, 87, died March 8 in the IHM Health Care Center.
Sr. Larson was born Jan. 20, 1928, in Detroit to Walter and Elizabeth (Myers) Larson and given the name Betty Jane. She entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1946.
Her early teaching ministry included St. John and Hall of the Divine Child, Monroe; Holy Redeemer and St. Francis de Sales, Detroit; and St. Joseph, Trenton. Sr. Larson also served on the sociology department faculty at Marygrove College for 30 years, during which she served as the school’s representative to the National Conference for Community and Justice for several years.
Sr. Larson also served Detroit’s Open Housing Movement, Michigan Welfare Rights Organization, Mother Waddles and Operation Breadbasket.
Sr. Larson was preceded in death by her brothers, Marion, Walter, David and William. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Millie (Mrs. David Larson) and nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial was March 12 at the IHM Motherhouse. Burial is at St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus.
