Sr. Geraldine Megel, OP

Sr. Geraldine Megel, formerly known as Sister Madonna Leo Megel died Aug. 31 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 81 and in her 62nd year of religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sr. Megel was born in Detroit to William and Frieda (Miller) Megel. She graduated from Immaculata High School in Detroit and received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in English and a Master of Education degree, both from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, and a Master of Religious Education degree in religious studies from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas.

Sr. Megel spent 23 years ministered in Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, South Carolina and Kentucky. She also spent three years ministering in community development in Kroonstad, South Africa. In the Archdiocese of Detroit, she taught at Precious Blood in Detroit from 1954-61. She also was a chaplain at Grace Hospital in Detroit in 1985-86 and Harper Hospital in Detroit in 1986-87. Sr. Megel became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan in 2011.

She is survived by brothers: David, James and Timothy, and sister Suzane Mike.  She was predeceased by sister Sr. Ann Timothy Megel, OP.

Her funeral Mass was Sept. 2 in the St. Catherine Chapel in Adrian. Burial was in the Congregation cemetery.
