Sr. Gloria Kelly, OP

Sr. Gloria Kelly, formerly known as Sr. Helen Michael Kelly, died Aug. 22 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 85 and in the 67th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sr. Kelly was born in Detroit to Harold and Helen (Hisenleder) Kelly. She graduated from St. Theresa High School in Detroit and received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian a Master of Arts degree in English from Loyola University in Chicago, and a Master of Religious Studies degree from the University of Detroit (Detroit-Mercy).

Sister ministered for 25 years in education in Oak Park and Chicago. She was principal at St. Mary School in Van Wert, Ohio, for six years. She was a religious education consultant for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for two years, and religious education coordinator for 22 years in Michigan. Sr. Kelly was a teacher at St. Joseph Academy, Adrian (1958-60), and St. Mary, St. Clair (1964-65); a religious education coordinator at St. Norbert, Inkster (1973-76), St. Bernadine of Siena, Westland (1976-88), and Our Lady of La Salette, Royal Oak (1988-92). She also was a pastoral minister for three years at Our Lady of La Salette in Royal Oak (1992-95). Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2011.

Sr. Kelly is survived by a sister, Rosemary Flanagan of Grosse Pointe Woods, and a brother, John Kelly, of Bloomfield Hills.

The funeral liturgy was offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Aug. 27. Burial in the Congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, Michigan, 49221.
