Sr. Jane Edward Schutz, OP, formerly Rita Schutz, died March 8. She was 95 and in the 77th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.Sr. Schutz was born in Detroit to Anthony and Anna (Jennings) Schutz. She received degrees from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, DePaul University in Chicago, and Aquinas Institute in St. Louis.
Sr. Schutz spent 31 years in education in Michigan, Illinois, New York and California. In Michigan, she served at Resurrection, Lansing (1938-49); St. Alphonsus, Dearborn (1952-60); Our Lady Gate of Heaven, Detroit (1960-66); St. Paul, Grosse Pointe Farms (1972-74); and SS. Peter and Paul, Ruth (1979-80), including as principal at Our Lady Gate of Heaven and SS. Peter and Paul. Sr. Schutz also served as associate director of vocations and permanent diaconate for the Archdiocese of Detroit for six years, and in pastoral ministries for 21 years in St. John Parish in Davison.
Sr. Schutz is survived by two sisters, Anna Wagner of Lapeer and Beatrice Glasgow of St. Clair Shores, and a brother, Gerald Schutz of Winchester, Va. She is also survived by a niece, Sr. Mary Vianne Bayus, OP.
A funeral Mass was March 13 in St. Catherine Chapel in Adrian. Rite of Committal will be in the Congregation cemetery.
