Sr. Jane Maison, CSJ




Sr. Jane Maison, CSJ, formerly known as Sr. Frederine Maison, SSJ, died Oct. 2, in Grosse Pointe. She was 87.

Jane Maison was born in St. Clair Shores on Sept. 13, 1924, the daughter of Jesse and Gertrude (Champine) Maison. She was a member of St. Gertrude Parish in St. Clair Shores at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on July 2, 1943. She received the name Sr. Frederine at her reception on Jan. 3, 1944, but later returned to the use of her baptismal name. She pronounced first vows on Jan. 3, 1946, and final vows on Jan. 3, 1949.

Sr. Maison graduated as a registered nurse from St. Camillus School of Nursing and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in nursing fromNazareth College. She did post-graduate work in pediatrics at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

For 49 years Sr. Maison ministered in health care as head nurse, supervisor, director of nurses and as an I.V. nurse. Her long, faithful ministry took her to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, St. Joseph Hospital in Flint, Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac, and St. John Hospital in Detroit.

She retired in 1998, but she continued to do volunteer work as a patient visitor at St. John Hospital and the St. John Senior Community.

She is survived by ten brothers and sisters; many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated last Friday, Oct. 28, in Holy Family Chapel, Nazareth, near Kalamazoo. Interment was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery at Nazareth.
