Sr. LeahyBorn in Detroit on Sept. 29, 1925, Jean Gibbons Leahy was one of two daughters of John and Marion (Miner) Leahy. Baptized at SS. Peter and Paul Church, Detroit, she graduated from Marygrove College and entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1947.
Sr. Leahy taught at St. Joseph, St. Mary and St. Mary Academy (Monroe) and at St. Michael in Flint. After pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., she earned a doctorate in education from Wayne State University and went on to become a professor of art at Marygrove College in Detroit, where she served from 1955-98 as assistant professor of art, departmental advisor, and art therapist.
During her retirement, she resided at the Marygrove Convent and cared for her sister, Margaret (“Patti”) Leahy De Ceballos. Sr. Leahy moved to Monroe in 2004 and then to the Motherhouse in 2009, where she led art classes.
Sister Leahy is survived by a cousin, Dr. Richard Leahy and family, as well as her sisters in community. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 21 at the IHM Motherhouse. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery there.
