Sr. Joseph Marion Shappelle, SC, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati nursing facility, Mother Margaret Hall, Mount St. Joseph, Ohio. She was 84.
Born Ruth Mary Shappelle on March 3, 1926, in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary (Friedman) Shappelle.
She was a Sister of Charity for 66 years, serving in education, as formation direction and in parish ministry in the Archdiocese of Detroit and the dioceses of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Pueblo, Colorado.
She earned a bachelors degree in education from the Athenaeum of Ohio, Cincinnati, a bachelors degree in English from the College of Mount St. Joseph, Cincinnati, , and a Master of Arts in English from the University of Notre Dame.
Her many years of ministry in education were spent mostly teaching at schools in Ohio, but she served one year in the Detroit Archdiocese, at Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak (1960-61).
Sr. Joseph Marion’s brother, Fr. Jim Shappelle, said of his sister, “She had innumerable nieces and nephews and she never missed a birthday, graduation, anniversary or any other special day in their lives. I will miss her.”
In addition to Fr. Shappelle, she is survived by brothers C. Joseph and Charles Shappelle, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 9 in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati motherhouse. Burial was in the Sisters of Charity cemetery.
