Sister Laurentia McMillan, CSJ, died Jan. 19 in Kalamazoo. She had been a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth since 1933.
She was born Mary McMillan in Hubbardston on October 23, 1914, the daughter of John and Anna (O’Connell) McMillan. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish in Hubbardston at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth. She received the name Sr. Laurentia at her reception on Aug. 25, 1933. She pronounced first vows on August 26, 1935, and final vows on Aug. 26, 1938.
Sr. McMillan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Nazareth College and a Master of Arts degree in History from the University of Detroit. She pursued additional graduate studies at the University of Notre Dame. She taught in several schools of the congregation including St. Francis Xavier in Ecorse, St. David in Detroit and St. Margaret in Otsego. She was a member of the SSJ Leadership team for twelve years and also served as Supervisor of Schools for the congregation. She retired in 1992 but proceeded to minister to the sisters at Fontbonne Manor.
Sr. McMillan is survived by a sister, Florence Behan of Lauderdale by the Sea, Florida; nieces and nephews.
Her funeral Mass was Jan. 24 in Holy Family Chapel at Nazareth.
