Sr. Loretta Francis Demick, OP

Sr. Loretta Francis Demick, formerly known as Mary Louise Demick, died March 27 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 89 and in her 71st year of religious profession.

Sr. Demick was born in Detroit to Frank and Loretta (Theisen) Demick. She graduated from St. Mary High School in New Baltimore, and received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in history from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a Master of Arts degree in history from John Carroll University in Cleveland.

She ministered for 34 years in elementary school education in Detroit, Farmington and Saginaw, and schools in Illinois and Ohio. In the Archdiocese of Detroit, she taught at Holy Name in Detroit (1949-52), St. Jude in Detroit (1954-56), and was principal of Precious Blood in Detroit (1962-68) and Our Lady of Sorrows in Farmington (1968-74). She ministered at the parish and in religious education at St. Mary Parish in New Baltimore from 1974 until 1996.

Sr. Demick is survived by five brothers, Francis, David, Thomas, Joseph,  and James; and three sisters, Irene Claus, Margaret Wayne and Theresa Kret. She also is survived by two cousins who are Adrian Dominican Sisters, Sr. Jean Horger and Sr. Mary I. Assenmacher. She was preceded in death by seven Adrian Dominican cousins.
